Willed body program and organ donation

02.26.09 | Comment?

A person willing to give away his whole body, after his death, for medical research and study, can do so by entering a willed body program at a medical centre. For this he is required to fill a will form at the concerned medical centre. This form will need the donor?s signature along with signatures of two witnesses. After receiving the will form, the concerned medical authority will send a donor card as an acknowledgement receipt which the donor should keep with him. In case the donor could not fill the form before dying, then on- the- spot donations are also possible. In such cases, the next of kin may contact willed body programs for donations.

Willed body program have certain criterion and for not meeting those, the medical centre reserves the right to decline the body. So, if the deceased was suffering from TB, HIV, and syphilis, jaundice or any other communicable disease, the body can be rejected. The centre can refuse to accept the body, if an organ has been removed form the body except eye. If a person has already consented for organ donation, before his death, then he is not eligible for willed body program. Eyes are an exception that means, even if you have consented for whole body donation, you can donate your eyes to an eye bank.
